Paper's edict draws dissent - By Jay Fitzgerald
Friday, July 15, 2005 - Updated: 12:37 AM EST

An e-mail exchange about the use of racial descriptions in newspaper crime stories led to the suspension of two Eagle-Tribune staffers and a mini-brouhaha about political correctness run amok at the Lawrence newspaper.

The incident began late last month when an Eagle-Tribune production editor sent a company-wide e-mail to reporters and editors announcing a new edict.

"Refrain from using race to describe or identify people in crime stories, for example, `a black man in a green jacket and baseball cap.'"

The message said that ``unless the rest of the description is detailed enough to be meaningful and distinguishes that person from other members of his or her race, such sketchy descriptions are meaningless, may apply to large numbers of innocent people and tend to stereotype ethnic groups.''

Ken Johnson, the newspaper's editorial page editor, fired back in his own e-mail.

"This strikes me as just so much wrongheaded PC nonsense," wrote Johnson, in a copy of the exchange obtained by the Herald.

"Are we to write that `Three men from east Texas were convicted of dragging James Byrd behind a pickup truck until he was decapitated' without mentioning that the thugs were white and the victim black?" asked Johnson, referring to the infamous 1998 racial killing in Jasper, Texas.

A staffer, Bryan McGonigle, then chipped in with his own anti-edict sarcasm.

"Actually, the victim would technically be black and blue and maybe red all over," he wrote. `"And he'd be called a `cerebrally-challenged American with dramatic skull deficiency.'"

That prompted an assistant editor at the Salem News, a sister newspaper of the Eagle-Tribune, to complain that McGonigle's e-mail was `"disgusting and offensive."

The exchange ended abruptly when a top Eagle-Tribune editor, Karen Andreas, e-mailed everyone: `"Please stop this e-mail trail immediately."

The episode might have died down soon after - except both Johnson and McGonigle were later suspended for three days each, according to sources, who said the two have already served their suspensions.

Some newsroom sources said they can somewhat understand McGonigle's suspension for his brutal sense of humor.

But the suspension of Johnson, who is widely respected at the paper, shocked many staff members who believed he was simply challenging a guideline on well-articulated principles.

Johnson and McGonigle declined comment and referred questions to managing editor Al White, who could not be reached for comment.

In a message to staffers after the e-mail exchange, editor-in-chief Bill Ketter defended the caution on identifying people by race in crime stories. "PC has nothing to do with it," he wrote. "Being responsible and fair has everything to do with it." Ketter couldn't be reached.

The problem with mentioning the race of criminals is people will
quickly see the pattern of the non-white crime wave, and that could
expose a big lie of the egalitarians that everybody is the
same. But in reality, most people already know that the
different behaviors of the different races. The powers that be
either believe that have hidden it or they don’t want people to see
reminders and proof everyday in the newspapers crime reports.

Good post Michael, they seem to be trying to change the positions of the White and non white races. How could they ever explain to our kids and grandkids that they will be ruled by criminals and lawbreakers unless they hide the information of their horrific behavior in our society!

If you cover up non white aberrant behavior, and force feed the public that these folks surely are judges, police chiefs, school administrators, news anchors, etc. as is done by our corrupt media,it is amazing how many members of our "sheep"society will buy into it.

I'm troubled by the fact that so many of our folks actually feel that these positions were earned, instead they were forced on us by affirmative action.

Society is embracing a ghetto mentality.

Some people will fall for the propaganda until they are exposed to the
real non-whites and see the truth with their own eyes. Like White
children in our multiracial public schools. They may pretend to
be politically correct and give the proper politically correct answers
and actions, but deep down in their hearts they know the truth, and
given the right setting, they will become racial
nationalist.

Race exists to the media if it can help them manipulate the masses.

I don't believe you have to really go down very deep; a self-preservation instinct asserts itself when confronted with reality.

Example: I once made a standing offer: I will get a nice, crisp one hundred dollar bill. It will be given to anyone who accepts my conditions, which are that I will drive them about a mile deep into a certain area which I have in mind, after dark on a Saturday night. I will leave them there, and will myself return to civilization. At a brisk pace, you can walk a mile in about 15 minutes; if you have everparticipated ina 10K, you can do it in half that time.

If they get back alive to where we have prearranged to meet, the one hundred dollars is theirs. If they do not return, I will send a floral piece to the funeral parlor where they repose (so far, I have no takers).

Requiescat in Pace...

You are probably right that with most people it is not deep down in how
they view the world, but it is deep down in what they express
outwardly. A few may convince themselves that all races are the
same but most that use those words know they are not true.

Good idea to show how some people are hypocrites
when it come to race. Many of the very people who want little children
bussed to those areas would not go into them in the day time themselves
and no way at night.
