Wait a minute! The State Department sponsored a trip to the Southern Poverty Law Center? Isn't the SPLC the group that makes so much money by saying nasty things about Southern heritage and Christianity? Why, if the Federal government holds them up as an example to visiting foreigners, then what must it really think about me and my people -- or about my Christian faith? What am I really supporting here?

And let's not just pick on Southerners and conservatives hypnotized by country music anthems to Old Glory and "kick-butt" militarism. Liberals who bravely defend the poor and oppressed by making tax-free donations to the SPLC should be worried about this news item also. Why, wasn't the State Department responsible for the creation of the School of the Americas, the death-squad academy that trained right-wing dictators throughout Latin America how to murder poor peasants and freedom fighters? The same State Department that helped build the case for invading Iraq, and still defends the ongoing occupation of Iraq? What am I really supporting here?

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma -- In a stunning development today in the ongoing Freedom of Information trial surrounding the Oklahoma City bombing, a federal judge ruled that Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh had help from "inside the militia movement" and ordered that several people and organizations, including the Southern Poverty Law Center, be investigated for complicity in the 1995 terrorist attack.
US District Court Judge Dale Kimball ruled today that the Southern Poverty Law Center defintely received warnings about the planned bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building when Timothy McVeigh called Elohim City looking for Andreas Strassmeir, also believed by some to be an informant, just days before the attack, and may have instructed one of their informants to help organize and plan the bombing:
"Plaintiff points out the fact that this document indicates there was an undercover operative [affiliated with the SPLC] in with Timothy McVeigh and members of the various militia groups who aided and supported McVeigh, but plaintiff wonders why, given the subject matter, there are no earlier records produced by the FBI."
The judge followed that by ordering the FBI to release any and all documents relating to their relationship to Morris Dees, the Southern Poverty Law Center, and the group's informants.
The judge also ruled that Kenneth Trentadue and Richard Lee Guthrie, individuals involved with the white Republican Army, a bank robbery group believed by some to be linked to McVeigh, were beaten, tortured and murdered by US FBI agents who attempted to cover up the killing by refusing to release internal agency documents:
"While the FBI's failure to discover documents is not necessarily and indication of bad faith, it is puzzling that so many documents could be referenced but not produced."

Here's a KKK story from right on the border between Indiana and the Land of Lincoln. Gee, there are an awful lot of them above the Mason-Dixie Line -- and can somebody tell us how the sheriff's sidekick can flatly state "It’s not a joke. It’s not a prank,” and automatically treat it as a hate crime? Is he clairvoyant?
Maybe the paper is partly trying to point up the dishonesty of SPLC motormouths with this inclusion. The ubiquitous Miss Beirich somehow neglects to mention that lots of "hate crimes" are perpetrated by minorities trying to drum up sympathy for their "people". (Or to strategically keep social conflict boiling?)

Family finds ‘KKK’ scorched into lawn
A day after a northern Vigo County couple found the letters “KKK” burned into their front yard, the FBI joined the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department in the investigation.
“It’s not a joke. It’s not a prank,” said Sheriff’s Lt. Tim Gossett, classifying the probe as one into a hate crime, based on race.
Gossett, along with an FBI agent, spent part of Friday afternoon interviewing Emanuel and Amelia Smith.
The Smiths reported Thursday morning to a sheriff’s deputy that someone had singed their well-manicured lawn, scorching 6-foot initials for the Ku Klux Klan into the grass.
A tire on their son’s Dodge Neon also was flattened outside the Smiths’ home on North 38th Street, just south of Marquette Avenue.
“This is 2006. You just don’t think of this type of thing happening,” said Amelia Smith, who works as a bank branch manager. “People still have hatred toward African-Americans”......................
