Any such rubric as the above will have to include the Christian or pseudo-Christian kind. As a matter of fact it's the latter species that prompts this thread.

Something just prompted me to do a little reading on the Crystal Cathedral -- a church that once meant a great deal to me., way before the real world came along.

Its architect was one of the gods of modernism, Philip Johnson. Wonder what his fee was. The family life center was designed by another "name" architect, Richard Meier.

Are you ready for the list of glitterati who have given their "testimony" there? I hope so. From Wiki -- emphasis mine:
<br style="color: rgb(102, 0, 51);">The Cathedral is renowned for featuring on a regular basis the testimonies of famous celebrities and ordinary people living extraordinary lives during the Hour of Power services. Notable guests have included </span>former USSR president Mikhail Gorbachev, </span></span>former president of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, </span>former Vice President Al Gore, former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, </span>noted Catholic broadcaster Fulton J. I haven't wanted to think Mormonism was all that </span>far out, but I've just seen a Jeremiah Films production on the subject which is mind-numbing. One of their doctrines is that some sins are so bad that Christ's blood can't atone for them -- the sinner's blood must be shed. Some or all of the time this means murder.

They interviewed a beautiful, gracious young woman who tells of the "atonement" murder of her brother and niece. She adds that if anything ever happens to her she holds the Mormons to be responsible for it. Then they freeze the frame and add a caption -- that she was killed a short while after giving the interview.

Turns out she was a member of a multi-generational Mormon dynasty -- the Lebarons -- who committed these killings and more.

It's too horrible for words. The film asserts that this and other vices is typical of Mormonism and not just that branch. Probably without meaning to, it proves to my satisfaction that Mormonism is, as so often alleged by supposed "conspiracy nuts", nothing but thinly-veiled Freemasonry -- the dead giveaway being the abovementioned ban on divulging of secret church doctrine and practice. They show the ritual in progress, probably a dramatization, in which people agree that if they ever so snitch, their throats will rightfully be slashed by the brethren.

The architecture seems to leave them no defense -- the inverted pentangle and Babylonian sun face taking the place of the cross in their temples' decor.

Here's the saddest, craziest thing. Don't look.

The bigger the church the worse it becomes. It never fails. They have a tendency to get wrapped up in so many things that they soon leave their first love--which is the message of the simple gospel.
